Big news, Austinites—Forbes recently named Austin the #1 city of the future. While this doesn’t mean we’ll be getting jet-packs or flying cars any time soon (although, who knows what they’re working on over at the Austin Google offices), there’s still plenty to celebrate.
To secure the #1 spot on the list, we had to beat out cities like Denver, Raleigh, San Francisco, Seattle, and even our neighbors Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. So, what was the criteria that placed us at the top? Check it out:
The Growing Population
The number of people born in Austin and/or moving to our city is seeing some exponential growth. According to Forbes, the overall population growth between 2010 and 2014 was 13.2%.
Increasing Job Opportunity
Fortunately, as the number of people in our city grows so does the number of jobs. Between 2010 and 2015 the job growth was 19.1%. Overall, this city is one of the best places to find a job and the average Austinite makes a salary of $49,560, which is 2.6% higher than the national average.
An All-Around Smart City
There is an abundance of highly educated people living in Austin as nearly half of the population holds at least a bachelor’s degree.
And, aside from education level, our city will also be host to the 2016 Smart Cities Innovation Summit. According to this site, “Austin has been declared one of the top 10 Smart Cites to watch, turning to technology to better connect our communities, improving citizen services, and perhaps most of all, finding more intelligent ways to manage resources.”
