Smithville has the distinction of being a fairly rural town, with much of what you could find in a large city. It has a small population (just under 4,000), but it has plenty to offer culturally, including art, music, theater and film productions. Several films have been shot here, including Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” and Richard Linklater’s “Bernie.”

Smithville is about 45 minutes southeast of Austin, and it’s also a great place to live, especially for families. Plenty of parks are here if you love the outdoors, as well as a variety of festivals, garage sales, art shows, and much more. It’s a neat little town, without the hustle and bustle of a large city.
