Reason #118 of Why You Should Move To Austin: Food Trucks
“Why should you be excited about food trucks? Because they allow creative chefs…to start creating and selling their stuff, introducing themselves to the world without having to gather up a million dollars…They’re affordable, they’re democratic, and they are faster, better and infinitely preferable to fast food.”
While the above quote is from an Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown episode about Koreatown in Los Angeles, we wholeheartedly agree that food trucks—especially those in Austin—are something special.
There are so many fantastic food trucks in the greater Austin area that it’s almost impossible to try them all. You’ll find dishes from tex-mex to barbeque, churros to po’boys—and everything in between—all parked by a sidewalk near you.
So, what are the best food trucks in Austin that you need to try? We’ve compiled a list of our top 8 food trucks to check out! (In no particular order)
Need a refreshing treat in the middle of a hot summer day, but also want something (slightly) healthy? Bananarchy’s chocolate-dipped bananas have got you (and the bananas) covered. You can customize your own banana from the dipping options—which include peanut butter, chocolate, vegan chocolate, and vanilla—to toppings like Oreos, nuts, toffee, candy and more.
Can’t decide if you want Korean BBQ, tacos or French fries? Well, Chi’lantro is here to make all your cravings come true. Take the kimchi fries for example. These popular French fires are smothered with caramelized kimchi, cheddar and Monterey jack cheese, cilantro, onions, magic sauce, Sriracha, and sesame seeds.
- Churro Co.
Ever try a churro that’s tossed in graham cracker sugar and then topped with Mexican chocolate sauce, whipped cream and torched marshmallows? No? Well, there’s a first time for everything and the Churro Co. food truck will be more than happy to accommodate.
The most difficult thing about visiting a Gourdough’s food truck is deciding which donut to get. We recommend the Flying Pig, which comes complete with bacon and maple syrup icing or the gilled bananas and cream cheese miracle that is the Funky Monkey.
- Hey! You Gonna Eat or What?
Referred to by a Yelp user as the “HOLY GRAIL of sandwiches,” this food truck is another must for Austinites. Try the Shiner Monte Cristo—a Shiner bock beer battered sandwich that’s fried and served with cherry and fig jelly.
- la Barbeque
The beef brisket, pork ribs, turkey, and pulled pork are just a few of the reasons for the very long lines outside of this food truck. The reason people stay in line, however, is the free Lone Star beer that’s given out to customers while they wait.
- Torchy’s Tacos
Torchy’s is an Austin staple. If you happen to be standing on a corner and see a Torchy’s truck in the vicinity, get a fried avocado or green chile pork taco, even if you’re not hungry—you won’t regret it.
- Turf N Surf Po’ BoyYou can’t go wrong with this food truck’s namesake dish. The po’boy’s here feature several choices of meat—whether you’re in the mood for bacon and jalapeno wrapped shrimp or buffalo chicken and blue cheese. If you’re not into po’boys, you can get the same meat options as a taco or salad instead.
